Monumento a la protesta [A monument to protests]
Monument to protests is an interactive sculpture that comes into existence from the combination between the typical shapes of geometric abstraction, a very common form of public sculpture in main cities in Colombia and a public space gym.
It was developed during a renewed will for demonstrations initiated by women, students, social leaders, enviromentalists and racial minorities in Colombia,
and during an increase in tensions between those demonstrations and a traditionally oppressive government and culture.
The public sculpture was commissioned by the administration of a particularly authoritarian mayor in Medellin, and the gamble was to find a way to play with language and the institution in order to bring to light the right to protest as a relevant value in society.
